Facile layer-by-layer fabrication of semiconductor microdisk laser particles

Semiconductor-based laser particles (LPs) with an exceptionally narrowband spectral emission have been used in biological systems for cell tagging purposes. The fabrication of these LPs typically requires highly specialized lithography and etching equipment is done a cleanroom environment, hindering the broad adoption this exciting new technology. Here, using only easily accessible laboratory equipment, we demonstrate simple layer-by-layer strategy that overcomes obstacle. We start from indium phosphide substrate multiple epitaxial gallium arsenide layers are sequentially processed to yield various compositions properties. isolated each layer characterized, exhibiting excellent optical properties lasing full width at half maximum as narrow <0.3 nm typical thresholds ∼6 pJ upon excitation 3 ns pulse duration 1064 pump laser. high quality renders them suitable large-scale experiments, including those requiring multiplexing.
